A Pearl
Chevron never understood Pearls. Pearls were used for service, but never objected. They couldn’t think independently. Chevron had fought a good deal of Pearls in her day. They were natural fighters, swift, deft, precise, and Chevron would even dare to say strong. Despite their talent for combat they were condemned to an eternal life of service. They had to do whatever they were told, when they were told.
Chevron was stationed at a human settlement in northern Crystal territory. A range of mountains was being used as a border to divide land between Rose Quartz and her rebellious army, and the Diamonds. When Rose Quartz was planning for her rebellion she asked gems personally whether or not they wanted to join her. She preyed on desire, promising any and all gems a world free of ridicule and discrimination. Naturally all sorts of Pearls and Fusions, and outcasts of every color flocked to her. She was promising something they felt like they had been denied their whole life.
Rose Quartz approached Chevron one day a few days ago and asked if she wanted to join in her rebellion. She told her that she would be saving the humans from extinction, but also promised that nobody would treat her poorly because of her anatomic flaw.
Chevron couldn’t form eyes.
She was the only “blind gem” in history. She was born in a kindergarten, defective, unable to use her first sense. She was often picked on for her disability, but she was very old, and wise too. She could visualise her surroundings in a way that no human ever could, blind or not.
That’s why Chevron refused the offer initially, but joined for the sole purpose of being a spy. She leaked information to Diamonds whenever she got the chance, and assassinated key targets in the Crystal Gems, killing them while their guard was down.
Chevron was now posted at this shitty camp protecting a small human settlement. Chevron was tempted all of the time to just destroy the village and everyone else in her squad just to get this whole damned escapade over with, but with the nearest Diamond Authority camp being around the mountain range, there was no way that the Authority could get to the humans without a full on raid going through the camp that Chevron was posted in, and Chevron couldn’t fake that. The camp blocked all passage through the nearest pass for miles, a very strategic location. Chevron would need to find another way for her allies on the other side to get through, but for now, their new Pearl was arriving.
Wardite was sitting in the back of the transport. The gem vehicle was shooting across the desert, hovering just above the ground picking up dirt as it passed. The cart was the best the crystal gems could give, because the cargo on board was oh so very important.
Rose Quartz had entruster her personal Pearl to the gem camp Wardite was being shipped off to. Wardite had received news she would be protecting a small human settlement. Despite the small size of the camp, the people were informed that these humans were the most advanced in the Americas, with technology that was even comparable to that of the Gems.
As to why Rose Quartz had entrusted her own Pearl to a camp on the front lines, Wardite was clueless. There were rumors among Crystal Gems that Rose Quartz had been, regularly fusing with her Pearl. Now, fusing with a gem that wasn’t the same as you was abnormal to begin with, but a Pearl? Wardite didn’t question her superiors, but the Pearl looked off. It looked upset, but technically the Pearl outranked her so she didn’t ask, Wardite valued respect above all other things.
2015 AD
Chevron awoke as the salt water smacked against her face. The waves of the ocean were pushing her still form up the beach. Her body was embedded in the sand; she felt weak, she was sore all over from her last struggle. Another wave forced Chevron to her feet. She swore at the ocean and walked up the sand. Chevron didn’t like the sand, it limited several of her senses, she could easily be assaulted on the beach and she would never know it was coming. Chevron quickly worked her way away from the ocean, holding her hands out in front of her. After the beach left her behind, she got an idea of her surroundings. It was wet, humid, at first Chevron thought it was the ocean but wherever she was, it was moist.
“Hello, are you...”
A human approached from behind Chevron, she summoned her chain and grappled him around the stomach. She pulled him close and gave him a terrifying, eyeless grimace.
“How do I get to Delmarva!”
*GASP*
Wardite's body arced as she took in her first breath in years. She slumped down as she exhaled. How was she alive. She had vivid memories of dying in a battle with a fusion. She still felt remnants of the blow to her shoulder. She remembered the helplessness as it went in for the kill…
Wardite realized she was screaming. She stopped herself immediately, but she was still hyperventilating. She took a second to calm down, but the memory of watching her own gem shatter kept resurfacing. She started to cry. She didn't know how she was alive, but she partially wished she wasn't.

Chevron stood on the palisade wall that surrounded the camp, making sure that nothing came in or out. She hated the post, because nothing was stupid enough to try and attack the encampment. It was very well fortified for how close it was to the border of the Crystal Gems territory, and how far it was away from Roses Temple.
And suddenly, something was visible in the distance. A Gem transport, shooting across the desert. Chevron readied her weapon as the transport arrived at the gate. It was a diamond transport, but the rebellious insignia of Rose Quartz had been haphazardly painted across its surface.
The gate opened and the transport pulled in. A small crowd of infantry and a handful of high ranking humans gather around. A very small gem stepped out of the back of the transport, and began conversing with the leaders of the camp. Chevron didn’t know any of them by name, since she had only arrived last week, but recognised their authority. The largest of the leaders summoned her weapon, and a medium sized Pearl emerged from the back of the transport. It was donned in riches, and was quite possibly the most decorated Pearl he had ever seen. Who’s Pearl was this? It was wearing a clear silk cloak and a human crown, luxuries that Pearls were often denied.
Wardite had been informed by the three local leaders, an Onyx, a Jasper, and a Quartz, that this Pearl wasn’t going to be used as a servant. Pearl was being sent to investigate the compound, and flush out traitors. She would be playing the part of a Pearl, but would be investigating the troops. This camp was vital for the continuation of the human race, and Rose Quartz wasn’t accepting failure here.
2015 AD
A loud siren blared behind Chevron. She had fled the scene, but someone must have found the man she interrogated. She ignored the commotion and marched north. She had unfinished business with a certain Rose Quartz
A musty smell lingered in the air, the smell of what humans left behind. Wooden beams were visible throughout the hole she was in. A sliver of light crept in from above. A way out. Wardite used her size to strength ratio to practically run up the dirt wall, and wrapped her fingers around the loose, yet sound soil, and pulled herself into the sunlight.
Wardite pulled herself up. A strong scent of salt assaulted her nose, and the light blinded her. She was in a sea cliff cave, one she recognized. This is where her unit buried their dead.
The visions of her death assaulted her again, a headache instantly tore through the back of her head, forcing her to the ground. A tear escaped down her cheek as she relived the worst moment of her life. She remembered more and more over time. She was in an epic battle, when she caught the eye of a fusion with a hammer. She managed to avoid the first attack, but the second hammer smacked her out of the air. She flew back, and looked at her gem. Shards of it trickled down her shoulder…
She snapped back to reality. She needed to get a hold of herself. She clutched the gem on her shoulder, making sure it was still there, not spread all over the terrain. It indeed was, and an inspection showed it had no evidence of ever being broken in the first place.
Her headache faded over the course of an hour. She waited a few minutes after to finally leave the fetal position. She scooted over to the cave wall, and leaned against it. She was in shock she told herself, she just needed time. She looked where she had emerged from. An obelisk protruded from the sandy floor of the beachside cave she was in. It clearly said her name. This didn't really do her any good, only confirmed what she had already feared. She had been shattered and buried here, but why was she in one piece now? She curled up by the cave wall, and drifted to sleep.
