This thread is a serious discussion about the merits of video games: whether they are worth the time, are they evolving or devolving, etc.
Rules: 1. Please state your opinions in a calm, dignified, and sophisticated manner. 2. Don't try and force your opinion down others' throats without first offering up some substantial evidence. 3. Both qualitative and quantitative evidence are allowed. 4. Please try not to dominate the conversation; let everyone speak who wishes to do so. 5. No spamming permitted. 6. Don't be annoyed if someone tries to offer a counterargument.
With that out of the way, allow me to present the first argument. My view is that video games are growing too complicated. Video games ought to be just that--games. They ought to be simple distractions from modern life's myriad burdens; something to kill time on a Saturday afternoon; something to while away the hours on a snow day.
What do you think?

The complexity of videogames is only furthering the amount of time you play, simplicity is too soon over. Complexity equals depth, better stories to intrigue you, and a more desirable finish.

A game is defined as "a form of play or sport, especially a competitive one played according to rules and decided by skill, strength, or luck." Games don't stop being games when other things like story, plotlines and character development become relevant in addition to following this rule. Whether or not games should keep advancing in terms of those additions is a matter of opinion, but know that many of the most highly-regarded games occupy either extreme of that spectrum.
For example, there's tetris. This game has absolutely ZERO story in it, but it's become one of the most well-remembered games of all time. Games like Super Mario Brothers expanded this a little bit by giving it a basic scenario, but for a long time story wasn't the main draw of gaming. While I can't point where exactly Story started to become a draw to gaming (most likely a japanese RPG in the SNES/Genesis era), it started getting clear how important Story became to games by the release of Metroid: Other M.
Metroid: Other M occupies the other extreme of the spectrum, and gives the normally mute heroine Samus a voice. Suddenly people realized how much the stalward Samus of old made an impact on them, and they also knew that this voiced Samus was not the same. People became upset because this was different than the Samus they remember. The Samus from Other M would scream in terror at the sight of monsters, while the Samus of old would be silent and steady.
Not only did games evolve a story, they did it insidiously so, to the point where nobody would notice until that story was done wrong. Are games without story still good? Yes, many simple games still have no story, such as Minecraft. However, it would be foolish to ignore the impact that a video game's story has on people. Even if story isn't the main focus of a game, added story always adds to people's enjoyment of the game and makes it more memorable. Almost all of the great gaming icons we know today do this. Megaman's struggles with Assimovian principles of whether or not Robots should be considered alive, Samus Aran's constant struggles to survive the mutating world around her, the gigantic threats that Star Fox must face, Solid Snake's dilemma of dealing with evolving military technology and the ethics of nuclear warfare, the list goes on.
Gamers come for the gameplay, and stay for the story.
